How Tile Installation Works, Step by Step

What happens from the first call to the final cleanup: measuring, planning, prep, setting, grouting, sealing and walkthrough.

Call and describe the job

You tell us the rooms, the tile you like and your timing. We ask about the floor, the walls and any water issues.

Photos help us give a better first answer.

We schedule a visit to measure and look at the surfaces.

Measure and plan

We measure each surface, check flatness, look for moisture and discuss layout and trim. A plan is written with the scope, the materials and the schedule.

Pattern and starting lines are chosen so cuts fall in the least visible places.

You approve the plan before anything is ordered.

Prepare the surfaces

Old tile is removed, the floor is repaired and leveled and backer board or membranes are installed. Showers receive waterproofing and a flood test when appropriate.

Prep is where most of the long-term quality is built.

We protect nearby rooms and control dust.

Set the tile

Mortar is troweled on, tile is placed with spacers and checked for flatness and alignment. Cuts are made with a wet saw and edges are finished carefully.

Large tile uses back-buttering and leveling aids when appropriate.

Work is checked as it goes, not only at the end.

Grout and seal

After the mortar cures, joints are grouted, cleaned and left to cure. Stone and cement grout are sealed on schedule, and caulk goes in corners and changes of plane.

Cure times protect the work, so we explain when you can walk or shower.

We leave care instructions written down.

Walkthrough and cleanup

We walk the finished job with you, touch up details and remove debris. You receive care tips and a list of products to use and avoid.

Extra tile is labeled and left with you.

Call us if anything looks off, and we will take a look.

Our advice in one sentence

Good tile is built in the prep and the planning, so expect most of the time to go there.

Questions

Quick answers.

How long does tile take?

It depends on the scope. A small bathroom may take days, and cure times add time between steps.

Can I use the room right away?

Not immediately. Mortar and grout need time to cure, and we tell you when.

What if hidden damage appears?

We stop, show you, explain the options and agree on the plan before continuing.
